THE SALT GRANARIES IN THE HEART OF THE FORTIFIED CITY

3 minutes’ walk from the salt granaries and the Enclos district. In the 14th century, to face the English invasion, the city protected itself behind fortifications overhanging deep ditches that isolated it like an island. Two suburbs stretched out on either side of the city, the churches of Sainte-Catherine and Saint-Léonard patronized each. Nowadays, two of the three salt granaries built in 1670 remain. Classified as Historic Monuments since 1916, they host many cultural events every year: exhibitions, concerts, shows, conferences and seminars.

SAINT-LÉONARD CHURCH AND ITS SUBURB

The Saint-Léonard church is only 1 minute walk away. The district overlooks the media library and the premises of the Tourist Office and is distinguished in particular by the presence of its imposing church, dedicated to Saint Leonard, a young man from the court of Clovis, patron saint of prisoners. Documents testify to the existence of the church on this site as early as 1186. Its beautiful flamboyant gothic portal is considered as a last expression of medieval art. The washing-place that borders the church also belongs to history. Their existence is attested since the 15th century.
